The Novice Hunter Program (NHP) supports the new hunter, adults and youth, through detailed pheasant hunting knowledge, practical field experience, and quality instruction on a trap range. Upon completing NHP, hunters should have an understanding of common small game hunting skills and a solid base of knowledge to expand their hunting skills.
Students will attend a classroom portion covering pheasant biology, habitat, where to hunt, regulations, ethics, safety, gear, and field tactics. They will progress to a half day field session that includes a wing-shooting clinic and simulated hunt. After completing this program, NHP students will receive a vehicle permit to hunt NHP Walk-In Access (WIA) properties in Northeast Colorado. In addition, several mentored hunts will be offered during the pheasant hunting season to students that want additional instruction.
Students may borrow a shotgun for the field sessions and mentored hunts. All ammunition will be provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife for the wingshooting clinic. The Novice Hunter Program is a free event.
